Batoka expeditions

Depending on who you speak with in the whitewater world the Batoka rafting expedition continually ranks as first or second on the planet

If you believe in epic experiences and Victoria Falls is in your sights as a destination then you have to give Zambezi multi-day rafting some serious thought

During low water from August into December the one-day white-water run on the Zambezi is unquestionably the wildest of its type in the world.  Beyond these rapids however you enter into a stretch of the Zambezi that's encountered by only a score of people each year. It's a new world down there.

You'll cover grade 5 rapids, do some guaranteed portaging, camp on spectacular beaches and take in stunning scenery. Downstream you'll have time away from the commercial mayhem that you left behind on the first day's rafting.

The river's going to intimidate you and it could give you a serious pounding. This is really big water but it's warm and forgiving. You'll have time to get into the rhythm of the river, to appreciate the deeper silences of the Batoka Gorge. If you manage to unglue your eyes from the primal setting around the campfire you'll get blown away by the millions of stars at night. You're with some of the most highly regarded international guides each with an extraordinary sense of fun.  Fellow paddlers are from all walks of life with healthy appetites for adventure.

We run these trips on a set-date basis for a few low-water months each year. They last a week and when we reach the bottom of the gorge a helicopter takes you out for a final night above rapid #17 for a hot shower and celebrations.

There's a very good chance that a bit of Africa's "hakuna matata" spirit will rub off and stick after this trip.  If the Zambezi beat you up in the process then that spirit might overlay the bragging rights you just earned too!

  • All the facts
  • These are set-date whitewater expeditions from the Boiling Pot down as far as the Matetsi River. They're group departures from Zambia for 7 to 16 clients.

Some background on the Zambian expeditions

Rafting has long been plagued by the myth that it's dangerous, extreme and only for adrenaline junkies. The remoter stretches of the river requires a professional approach so we work with Hamish McMaster and his team to offer these Batoka expeditions in Zambia.

"Mush" is a Kiwi who'd spent many years guiding the best rivers around the globe. In Nepal, Zambia, Israel, New Zealand, Australia, America and Europe. Rafting is their profession so they do take things seriously.  Safety first, good food, great times and importantly loads of fun!

Beyond the fun, excitement and adventure the Zambezi's one of the best white water rivers in the world with "million-star" campsites, delicious food accompanied by après-rafting drinks, and entertaining professional raft guides.

    So let's get serious!

The Batoka expeditions are run as group-departures on a few set-dates between August and November each year. These trips are suitable for anybody who's in reasonably good shape with a healthy outlook on adventure and who's especially comfortable being active outdoors.

The trips are "packaged" as follows:

    • "The Mighty Zambezi": This is the real river trip. It's a 9-day trip in all with a full week on the Zambezi down to the Matetsi River mouth. $2600
    • "The Zambezi Blast": An 8-day trip with four full days on the Zambezi followed by two days on safari in Chobe. $2900
    • "The Zambezi Adventure": An 8-day trip with four days worth of Zambezi rafting; one day with two short Victoria Falls activities (elephant or lion encounters; Livingstone Island; Jetboats; canoeing; Gorge Swing or Tiger fishing); one full day activity (Chobe; kayaking; bungee; microlight...or another day's worth of rafting). $2600

Trips start and end in Livingstone.  Activities and meals as described are "all-in" bar some food on the arrival and departure days; additional alcohol of your choice; visas; flights and taxes; gratuities and personal purchases.  On take-out you're flown upstream by helicopter and the night is spent at Taita Falcon Lodge where accommodation is included, the celebratory dinner and drinks are settled direct. Contact us for the full dossiers on each package.

Private expeditions for your own group of family and/or friends should be booked well in advance and we close of the trip to others.

    Set-date rafting trips for 2013

    • 11 and 25 September
    • 1, 9 and 23rd October
    • 6 and 29 November
    • 4 December

    Taita Falcon Lodge

Perched on the edge of the Batoka Gorge Taita Falcon offers superb views onto rapids 16 and 17 directly beneath.  It's a fitting departure from the typical hotel style with spacious en-suite chalets affording both privacy and comfort.  The service is good, the service personal, food's great, the showers are hot and the drinks are cold. It's just the spot to repair to after the Batoka rafting, if anything it'll give you a chance to start winding up before you hit "civilisation" in Livingstone the next day.

The gardens are a colourful blend of indigenous plants and it's a bird watcher's paradise with over 210 birds identified including Vereaux (Black) Eagles, Peregrine Falcons and the lodge's namesake, the rare Taita Falcon.
