Lower Zambezi National Park

Including a national park, the Zambian side of the Lower Zambezi River stretches from Kariba Gorge to Mozambique

The Lower Zambezi River stretches from Kariba Dam right down to Mozambique and the Zambezi Delta. The northern shoreline in Zambia is home to the Lower Zambezi National Park surrounded by Game Management areas.

A broad floodplain stretches from the river, dotted with riverine forests and woodlands towards the purple Zambezi Escarpment in the distance. Wildlife populates the flood plain during the dry season, with many elephants retreating to the hills during rainy season.

The best time of the year to visit is from June to October. This is when leaves start to dry on the trees making game viewing easier. Activities take place by boat, vehicle and on foot.

The temperatures in October/November are very hot as the valley thirsts for the rains, which start around mid-November. Access into the park is very limited, and just two safari camps are open. The famous tiger fish with its sharp white teeth and fighting spirit is 'on the bite', and fishermen frequent the area.

Just two safari camps are open from December to May (excluding February) and this is an ideal time to visit if you'd like to enjoy this beautiful stretch of the Zambezi River pretty much on your own.
