The Chobe day-trip in Botswana is an essential
bit of safari fun if you're short on time in the Victoria Falls
area. It's a full day and includes a cruise up the Chobe
River with lunch and a game drive back back down. Make sure that
your camera's charged as the riverbanks produce good birding
and a spot of "reptiling" - crocodiles are ever present.
Elephant, buffalo, giraffe and hippo are commonly seen with
sable, leopard and numerous antelope regularly sighted on the game
drives. The Chobe day-trip starts around 07h00 at any hotel/lodge
in either Victoria Falls or Livingstone. You'll be back in
town by around 18h00. Normal price is
$170 (*Park Fees excluded). Passports and
visas will be required for the Botswana crossing.
Plan your time well and choose one of the following:
The canoeing takes place along a 15km-18km
stretch of the Zambezi River as it flows steadily past the Zambezi
National Park on the Zimbabwean shoreline and Mosi-oa-Tunya
National Park in Zambia. The wildlife is good and the pace is
gentle. The Victoria Falls trip runs from 07h00 to around
14h30. The Livingstone trip runs from 08h00 to around 17h00
daily. Normal price is $125
(*Park Fees excluded).
The elephant
trail is a sunrise or sunset activity. From Victoria
Falls it takes place on the Elephant Camp wilderness concession on
the edge of Batoka Gorge. The Livingstone herd is located at
Thorntree with access in the National Park. The morning trail
starts at 07h30 (06h30 in summer) and includes breakfast. The
afternoon trail starts at 15h30 from Victoria Falls, 14h30 from
Livingstone and includes sundowners in both cases. You'll
need a full 3 hours and the ride itself is up to 2 hours
long. Normal price is $130 in Zimbabwe,
$150 in Zambia (*Park Fees excluded in Zambia).
The horse
trails for experienced riders from Victoria Falls last
around 4 hours. These rides are conducted along the Zambezi
River in the Victoria Falls National Park and in game areas
adjacent to the Zambezi National Park. Normal price $100 (*Parks fees
excluded). A 2 hour trail for experienced riders is available on
request in Livingstone.
Walking in the bush is an outstanding opportunity to get a real
sense for what's going on. Nothing else quite delivers
the compelling mix of excitement, fear, vulnerability, respect and
awe that walking with an armed professional guide in big game
territory. Walking trails takes place from
Victoria Falls Safari Lodge early in the morning or late afternoon
and last around 3 hours. Normal price
$60 (*Parks fees excluded). A similar trail
within Mosi-oa-Tunya from Livingstone is available on
request.
